As crazy as it sounds, I love Michiganplan on relocating there September 2008.I am from Chicagowant to be in a city2-4hours from Chicago and that is diverse. 1.What city is this? Kalamazoo doesnt seem to have much diversity or a big Black population, and Detroit I hear is dangerous. 2.What are some diverse suburbs of Detroithow far are they from downtown? 3.What neighborhoods n the cities of Michigian do you all suggest should I live in?I am Black but I love diversity,I want to live around all races. 4.What are the major hiring companies n Michigan? 5.What are some helpful tips you all have4someone moving to Michigan? 6.Do the cities you recommend have a good transportation system (busestrains)I have a car but its sometimes more efficiant to take public transportation. 7.Where do singles looking to meet someone hang out? 8.Is the cost of living expensive? 9.Where can I get a 2 bedroom apartment in a good area for under $650? 10.what is the best thing about the city you suggested?
I love Michigan. Every since I was a baby my family would go to St Joseph during the summer and stay on my uncle’s estate. It was gorgeous, we have travelled all over the world for vacation and honestly michigan was my favorite vacation. Then my boyfriend at the time went to Kettering University in Flint, and when he was down at U of I Champaign-Urbana visiting me, I was up there and even though Flint was dirty I still loved it! lol Then his friends would take me to Detroit to hang out and party, they took me to Auburn Hills for a Pistons game, and Holly for a homecooked dinner- it was serenity to me. Thats where my heart and soul is. Thats where I want to be. Thats why I want to move

I relocated to another state with my current employer under the terms that i would be there for 12 months. unfortunately, i will not be able to see the last 2 months through due to personal / family reasons. i was curious how companies have employees repay the package back. also how would one go about trying to negotiate a pro-rated amount or repayment plan?
Personally, I don’t have the money to repay it back immediately in one giant sum. also i never signed a repayment agreement but i did sign an offer letter that stated how much i will be making annually and that the company would be offering me a relocation package to assist with my move. The company policy just states that i will need to pay it back if I leave volunatrily before my year is up, but has no other details.
any tips would be helpful.
thank you so much

I was scouted by a company in a neighboring state (240 miles away). I have extensive experience with their type of products and they’ve scheduled a second interview. My family cannot afford to move without some type of relocation assistance. This isn’t a huge company, but they have very high revenue for their size, meaning I don’t think it would be a hardship for them. Am I in a good position to leverage for relocation assistance?

I work at a company where the owner is asking us to reimburse relocation expenses without taxing or 1099′ing the employee. These are expenses like the deposit on someone’s apartment, the deposit on utilities, installation/startup costs of their digital cable tv, application fee for new apartment etc. These are for employees who are being relocated within the company (not new employees).
It seems like the owner wants to avoid paying the employer share of taxes or grossing up so that the employee gets their full reimbursement. He doesn’t care if its wrong but what are the consequences? Will he just get nailed during an audit since they aren’t valid business expenses? Should we put it through payroll anyway?
He also does this for things like phone allowances or home office allowances.. reimburse people for things that do not have receipts but not through payroll or 1099’s. He only wants to pay $70 and promised the employee he’d pay them $70 (doesn’t want them taxed).
I feel like its wrong to pay those expenses but what is the wrong of it? I feel for the employee who needs the $70 to pay their cell phone or the $100 to cover increases in utitlties because they were forced to work from home, but how is it a valid work expense? Its an allowance… in essence, a bonus. If there is no receipt, you can’t document it as a business expense.
If the owner wants the checks cut out of Accounts Payable (bypassing payroll) then what? They are subject to taxes but he’s insisting we do it wrong. We could 1099 the employee at the end of the year but that seems wrong/mean.
He knows this stuff is wrong but somehow doesn’t think the rules apply to him. What are the consequences?
Can he just do that? I don’t have the authority to insist things be done correctly, I’m just supposed to put them in the system the way I’m told. I’ve spoken up but the people above me can’t seem to reason with him.

Has anyone had any experience with an international pet relocation service? We will be moving from US to Bahrain and will be moving our 3 dogs as well. I have been researching different pet relocation companies but wanted to see if I could get a different response on here. Any information would be helpful.

My husband and I are planning to move out on our own but we have no idea where to start. I got this email from a Relocation Specialist and was wondering these questions,
Do I pay them to help me find an apartment?
Is it best to have a relocation specialist help me and if yes, what else can they assist me with other than help me find an apartment?
Is it always best to get a relocation specialist?

I want to relocate but I think the best most successful way to do so would be to go with a company that offers positions all over the country. How do I find out which companies offer relocation assistance? Thanks.

The company I work for moved me to Illinois 16 months ago. In return, I signed an agreement stating I would pay back relocation if I left within 2 years. Moreover, all monies have to be paid back within 1 month of my leave date. I made a BIG mistake and didn’t read the fine print. It turns out I have to pay back EVERYTHING if I leave before the two year period. This job has been awfull and it’s to the point that it starting to make me physically ill. I can’t afford to pay back the money because the salary is not comensurate with cost of living expenses and I have wracked up a bunch of debt just by trying to keep a roof over my head and gas in the car. I approached HR about my concerns which has only caused more friction between myself and management. I feel so trapped. Is there any way I can get out of the contract?
To clarify:
1) I was working for another company (in Iowa) prior to accepting this job. Part of the recruitering enticement to lure me away (boy…was that a mistake!) to the new company was the relocation package.
2) The relocation is not prorated! As I said before, more fool me for not reading the fine print, simply because I assumed it would be prorated!
3) If I leave or am fired for just cause (can;t any company find a reason to fire someone if they want them gone?), yes I have to pay everything back.
4) A scary thought…can they fire me with no warning or chance to improve an issue right before my commitment is up and still make me pay back all the original relocation costs?
Mild meds? I think I’m going to need something much stonger to get through these next eight months! A smart company would recognize that the low morale has very negative connotations and let the person move on, or at least offer to prorate the expenses. And people wonder why the sales of sawn of shotguns keep escalating (ok…bad joke)
